In a disturbing event this week in Pompano Beach, a pit bull mix was found alongside her two puppies, suffering from gunshot wounds. The Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies arrived on the scene yesterday morning, near the 100 block of Northeast 17th Court, where the wounded dog was discovered and promptly transported to Deer Run Animal Hospital for medical treatment. The Sheriff's office's Special Victims Unit has launched an investigation into the incident, Local10 reports.

According to WSVN, the dog, named Sparkles by her caretakers, was found barely moving, covered in blood, and had been in that state for nearly 10 hours. Cindy Mucciaccio of I Heart Animal Rescue, which is now caring for Sparkles, told WSVN a police officer alerted them of the situation. "Polie told me that they think it might be the neighbor, because the neighbor didn’t like the dog, supposedly warned them that he was going to shoot the dog, and I guess he did, but we don’t know that for sure," Mucciaccio said. The medical staff at Deer Run are now focused on helping Sparkles make a full recovery.

Dr. Sara Gangadin of Deer Run Animal Hospital detailed the gravity of Sparkles' condition, noting the dog had lost an extensive amount of blood and was struggling to even lift her head. Despite the gruesome ordeal and the excruciating pain, Dr. Gangadin observed that Sparkles remains gentle and loving, remarking, "She’s been really nice, sweet. She actually was giving Cindy kisses so, especially in such a poor condition and for what happened to her, she’s an amazing dog," according to WSVN.

The community has rallied around Sparkles, with calls for justice and offers of support for her medical expenses. "We just feel that the people who did this should go to jail," Mucciaccio expressed to WSVN. Those looking to assist with Sparkles' medical care and support the work of I Heart Animal Rescue can find more information on how to help through the organization's provided channels. Further updates on Sparkles’ condition and the ongoing investigation are expected in the coming days.
