Portland is set to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month with an array of activities at City Hall today. According to an official announcement from Councilor Jamie Dunphy's office, the City of Portland will host a pre-council program and a city council proclamation to emphasize the critical necessity of early cancer detection and equitable healthcare.
Councilor Dunphy's office-sponsored event aims to dramatically raise awareness within the community and will feature key partners such as Dr. Alexandra Zimmer from OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and Susan Stearns, CEO of the Pink Lemonade Project. Alongside them, youth advocate Nikhil Surya will also provide remarks, as highlighted in the City of Portland official news release from the city. Dunphy's statement underscored the universality of breast cancer's impact and the significant strides made in battling the disease. "Breast cancer affects nearly every family in every corner of our community. With advances in preventative care and early detection, it's a disease that is not necessarily the death sentence it once was," Dunphy told the City of Portland's news blog.
The morning program, slated to start at 8:30 a.m. in the City Hall Atrium, will provide a platform for civic leaders, health professionals, non-profit partners, and youth advocates to shed light on screening education and available local resources. Attendees can expect interactive engagement tables with information on breast cancer screening, risk awareness, and survivor support, according to the City of Portland.
After the Atrium gathering, the program will transition to the Council Chambers. Speakers are scheduled to quickly present their insights before the formal proclamation reading, reaffirming Portland’s dedication to health equity and early detection. Nikhil Surya contributed a personal touch to the cause by reflecting on how early detection played a pivotal role in his family, "I cannot imagine my life without my mom. And thanks to awareness and early detection, I don't have to," Surya said, as reported by the City of Portland's news portal.
