Provo residents are gearing up for some construction-induced changes as the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) kicks off the University Avenue bridge reconstruction. Starting October 1, the old bridge is slated to undergo a serious facelift aimed at improving the daily commute of drivers, as well as bolstering the safety and convenience for pedestrians and cyclists, UDOT News reported.

The new bridge will be equipped with two traffic lanes in each direction to ease the traffic flow, and a dedicated six-foot bike lane on both sides for cyclists. Pedestrians aren't left out of the picture, with UDOT promising new, wider, eight-foot sidewalks on each side and a 12-foot multi-use trail to connect the community. The bridge plans also include improved sight lines for drivers and a substantial protective fence over the railroad tracks. Initial preparation work is underway, but significant traffic disruptions are not expected until later in October.

According to UDOT Project Manager Andy Spencer, "This bridge is a vital connection for both Provo residents and regional travelers," as per UDOT News. Spencer elaborated that the redesigned structure is aimed not just at transportation efficiency but also at ensuring a more comfortable experience for everyone who uses it. With the project split into two phases spanning over the next two years, keeping one lane open in each direction during daytime is part of UDOT's strategy to maintain traffic flow throughout the construction period.
