Marco Andretti, a longtime figure in American motorsports and member of the Andretti racing family, announced today that he is retiring from professional racing, including the Indianapolis 500. The 38-year-old driver concludes a chapter in IndyCar history.
Having competed in 20 Indy 500 races, Andretti shared his retirement on social media, expressing gratitude:, "To my family, friends, teams, sponsors, and fans who have genuinely supported me for the last 30 years in motorsports, I want to thank you for allowing me the privilege to continue our family’s passion on the racetrack," WTHR reported. He also noted that he had "six very legitimate shots at victory" during his career at the Speedway.
Marco Andretti's career stood out not only for its duration but also for his performances, particularly at the Indianapolis 500. According to FOX59, he achieved more finishes at the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" than his father, Michael Andretti, and tied with his grandfather, racing legend Mario Andretti, a notable achievement given Mario Andretti’s stature in the sport.
Over his nearly two-decade career, Andretti earned two race wins and finished fifth in overall points in 2013, showing consistent performance among top competitors. He also competed in NASCAR and ARCA events. As per IndyStar, Andretti’s career includes 20 podium finishes and six pole positions.
