Robinson, Illinois, is positioning itself as a hub for the future of industrial skills training with the advent of a new Career and Technical Training Center at Lincoln Trail College. The project, worth $13.4 million and supported by the Illinois Capital Development Board (CDB), commenced with a groundbreaking ceremony that took place on Tuesday. Designed as a state-of-the-art facility, it aims to provide hands-on training across various technical disciplines, including Welding, Process Technology, and Broadband Telecommunications.
Speaking on the significance of the investment, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker emphasized the center's role in bolstering the state's workforce. He said, "I'm proud to see even more shovels in the ground as colleges across our state grow, offering key technical programs that help make our workforce the best in the nation." Over the years, anticipation for the center at Lincoln Trail College has mounted, with Tona Ambrose, the college's president, acknowledging the project as a reflection of long-term academic and community aspirations.
LTC's future facility will span roughly 30,000 square feet and provide much-needed modern, industry-aligned classrooms and labs. According to the Illinois government announcement, projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate an upward trend in employment opportunities for the center's focus areas, promising jobs that command annual salaries ranging from $48,000 to $70,000.
IECC Chancellor Dr. Ryan Gower shared a similar tone of optimism, envisioning the center as a transformative space for individuals seeking to forge career paths in high-demand sectors: "It will give people the tools to build better careers and better lives—without ever leaving southeastern Illinois." The facility will extend its reach beyond college enrollees to include high school students through dual credit initiatives and local businesses via workforce partnerships.
Oversee the project in line with state construction protocols, the CDB has entrusted H.E. Mitchell Construction with the general contracting responsibilities. Graham & Hyde Architects, Inc. brings its architectural acumen to the blueprint of this ambitious project. TJ Edwards of the CDB remarked on the regional impact of the center, asserting its critical role in cultivating a skilled workforce equipped to meet contemporary industry demands.
