Salt Lake County is showing its colors, specifically green, to honor veterans and their families as part of Operation Green Light. From November 4th through 11th, the County Government Center, the District Attorney's Office, and the County Jail will be awash in verdant light as a symbol of appreciation for those who served. Residents and local businesses are encouraged to join in by swapping out a light bulb on their porch or storefront with a green one, a simple gesture to show veterans they are recognized and supported. More details can be found through the National Association of Counties (NACo) initiative or by searching the hashtag #OperationGreenLight for Veterans on social media platforms.
The county isn't stopping at just lighting buildings green. With a clear nod towards giving back to those who have given so much, Salt Lake County's approach to veteran support includes a variety of other benefits and programs. It's offering free pet adoptions to veterans via its Pets for Patriots program and tax relief options for disabled veterans courtesy of Salt Lake County Treasurer's Office. Veterans can also catch a free movie at Clark Planetarium on Veterans Day, with discounted tickets for family members. What's more, Salt Lake County Aging and Adult Services is teaming up with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide in-home services, case management, and backup for caregivers.
The Cell Phones for Soldiers program, set to run from December into January, presents another opportunity for community involvement. Donating an old cell phone can lead to vital calling cards for active-duty service members, making distant family conversations possible, according to Salt Lake County. Also noteworthy is the Veterans Treatment Court, an initiative aimed at addressing the challenges faced by former service members involved in the criminal justice system. By emphasizing rehabilitation, the court strives to enhance veteran well-being and diminish recidivism. Veterans also take part in the county's Parks and Recreation Adaptive programs, providing a variety of accessible activities and social events tailored for individuals with disabilities.
