Scottsdale is set to honor its veterans with a calendar packed full of events and observances throughout early November. As reported by Scottsdale's official city website, the happenings are part of a larger goal to raise awareness and show appreciation for those who have served in the United States military. Kicking off the tributes, nearly 50 street banners will be featured prominently in Old Town Scottsdale, showcasing veterans and active military members from the community, including city founder and Civil War veteran Winfield Scott.
In a nod to timeless service rivalries and camaraderie, the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships will, for the first time in Arizona, pit Army against Navy in a polo match scheduled for November 8 at WestWorld of Scottsdale. Adding significance to the match, Vietnam veterans Frank Lambert and Denny Wisely will execute the ceremonial "first drop" to start the event. Both men have their military service recognized as part of the "Scottsdale Salutes" annual recognition program, according to the City of Scottsdale Government announcement.
On Veterans Day, outdoor enthusiasts and patriots alike are invited to partake in a guided hike through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, culminating in a poignant ceremony. No registration is required for the city’s Veterans Day Commemoration later that day, which will include a moment of reflection and remarks from Air Force veteran Mario Valencia, recounting his experiences and survival of the 1995 Khobar Towers bombing.
An insightful throwback to World War II's local impact is on offer with a presentation by Scottsdale historian and U.S. Air Force veteran Joan Fudala. Veterans Day night, attendees can expect a collection of historical photographs retelling how World War II shaped Scottsdale, in an event free to the public but with limited seating at the CattleTrack Arts Compound. Further exploring Scottsdale's ties to military history, an interactive online story map called the Scottsdale Veterans Trail puts a spotlight on more than a dozen local sites honoring military service.
Those interested in learning more about veterans' resources in the Scottsdale area can find additional information by visiting the city's website and navigating to the veterans section. With these commemorative events and resources, Scottsdale aims to show continued support and gratitude to those who have donned the uniform in defense of the nation.
