The Broward Sheriff's Office has recently apprehended 45-year-old Dandrea Johnson following a violent incident that left an elderly man in a critical condition outside a Lauderdale Lakes Aldi. As reported by CBS News Miami, Johnson, accused of sucker punching a man who was accompanied by a service dog on Oct. 11, faced arrest almost two weeks after the alleged assault. Charged with felony battery with potential implications of great bodily harm, permanent disability, or disfigurement, Johnson was caught as a result of media-generated tips.
The violent exchange, as detailed by surveillance footage, began with an argument inside the store that seemingly centered around the victim's service animal. Following the verbal altercation, Johnson is said to have waited outside the entrance of Aldi, where he assaulted the shopper as he exited. According to WSVN 7News Miami, the unsuspecting victim was struck in the face, causing him to fall and hit his head, which resulted in a coma. Flyers had been posted and a $5,000 reward offered in the search for Johnson prior to his apprehension.
During a court appearance, prosecutors condemned the violent act vehemently, with one saying, "I've seen the video of this case, and it is just as brutal as described in the report," as per WSVN 7News Miami. They refuted any suggestion of the attack being an act of self-defense, noting that Johnson had positioned himself by the store entrance and attacked without provocation.
Defense for Johnson argued that the service animal had exhibited aggression towards him, stating, "And that pitbull basically attacked Mr. Johnson," according to the defendant's attorney during the bond court session. However, this claim was strongly disputed by prosecutors who observed, "There is nothing to indicate this was an act of self-defense your honor," which suggests no immediate threat by the dog.
