The University of Utah is setting the stage for a seismic shift in educational accessibility come Fall 2026 with the unveiling of the Utah Promise scholarship, a program that will fully cover tuition and mandatory fees for students from families earning less than $100,000 per year. In a move to widen the gateway to higher education, this initiative will support eligible first-time, first-year undergrads who achieve an unweighted high school GPA of 3.5 or above, as detailed by At The U.
“This is a transformative step for the University of Utah,” President Taylor Randall praised the program, as per At The U, highlighting the ambition to alleviate the oftentimes crippling dilemma between a college education and familial financial wellbeing, promising, “No student should have to choose between pursuing a college education and their family’s financial security,” Randall's stance reflects a broader pledge by the university to not only fling open the doors to educational opportunities for those traditionally barred by financial constraints, but also to maintain the academic success and timely graduation of its students.
It's not enough to be accepted into the Utah Promise program; students will need to keep their end of the bargain by reapplying for FAFSA every year, sticking to full-time course loads, and sustaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, prerequisites that the university hopes will foster dedication and excellence. Provost Mitzi Montoya said, “Utahns deserve affordable, high-quality education that prepares them for their eventual careers,” according to At The U.
