With festivities occurring from late October through November, these events are not just entertainment showcases; they stand as pillars for fostering understanding and bridging gaps between different heritages. Open to all, they offer a chance for the USU community to participate in and appreciate the rich tapestry of stories and traditions that these months commemorate.
Kicking off the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, Fiestas Américas will debut this Friday, Oct. 24, bringing an evening filled with the essence of Latin American culture. Located at the Evan N. Stevenson Ballroom in the Taggart Student Center from 6:30 to 10 p.m., attendees can look forward to music and traditional Día de los Muertos ofrendas, according to USU Today. As the month wraps up, a Día de los Muertos Procession on Oct. 30 will offer insight into the meaning behind this poignant remembrance of loved ones passed, culminating in a visual march across campus.
Transitioning to Native American Heritage Month, USU is poised to honor indigenous histories and cultures come November 4. Slated to take place at the Carolyn Tanner Irish Pavilion inside Mehdi Heravi Global Teaching and Learning Center, this event, starting at 11 a.m., promises educational displays, guest speakers, and vivid cultural presentations overviewing the legacies and values of Native Nations. On Nov. 20, USU elevates the celebration of Native American women with the Miss Native American USU pageant, part of a longstanding tradition that ties into the university's Pow Wow event.
The university is not just stopping at celebrations and pageantry. On Nov. 12, the Pluralism in Practice Series will be unraveling how diverse perspectives coalesce around shared cultural elements in everyday life. Set in the Aspen Room at the Taggart Student Center, this conversation intends to foster exchange and understanding by focusing on a simple yet profound theme: how a single item, word, or action can be interpreted in myriad ways, connecting people from differing backgrounds.
