At a recent ceremony at Salt Lake Community College's Grand Theatre, Utah's legal profession welcomed a batch of fresh faces. According to the Utah State Bar, the event celebrated the swearing-in of the state’s newest attorneys and five Licensed Paralegal Practitioners (LPPs).
Chief Justice Matthew Durrant of the Utah Supreme Court took the opportunity to directly address the newcomers, commending their achievements and reminding them they are now equipped to notably impact society and the course of justice. "Diligence, perseverance, intellect, and hard work" were the mix that brought them to this juncture, Durrant stated. He also highlighted the essential support system around each new legal professional, crediting families and friends in their success.
Justice Jill Pohlman delivered a speech rich with advice and anecdotal wisdom. Celebrating nearly three decades in the profession, she cautioned the newly admitted about the legal field's ever-evolving landscape. "You are more capable than you think," Pohlman urged, recounting a tale from her early days in a high-stakes case which demonstrated her own capacity. Additionally, she prompted the audience with phrases like "Just keep swimming" and said that they should look to be a "force for good," according to the report.
