Travelers in and around Belle Chasse may need to plan for detours, as the ongoing Belle Chasse Bridge and Tunnel Replacement Project is set to cause a series of lane closures. The scheduled construction activities will impact sections of LA-23, Engineers Road, Barriere Road, and adjacent intersections; these changes are contingent on the weather and may be subject to modification, according to the DOTD website.
Starting yesterday, at 7 p.m. through 5 a.m. on Thursday, traffic will alternate on northbound lanes from Barriere Road to Algiers Canal. With the southbound right lane, from Algiers Canal to Engineers Road, also being closed during this period, motorists should prepare for likely delays.
Similarly, commuters should anticipate alternating lane closures during nighttime hours on both today and Sunday, November 23, affecting both northbound and southbound traffic in the same stretches of road. The closures are necessary for the advancement of the large-scale infrastructure project that aims to update and improve the ageing Belle Chasse Bridge and Tunnel.
The pattern of nighttime lane alterations continues into the week, with Monday, November 24, seeing the right southbound lane, from Algiers Canal to Engineers Road, closed, and Engineers Road itself being partially closed with detours in place. These disruptions to the usual flow of traffic are a small but necessary sacrifice for long-term benefits to the region's transit infrastructure.
According to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, the series of lane closures concludes on Tuesday, November 25, with alternating northbound lane closures once more from Barriere Road to Algiers Canal and a right lane closure southbound from Algiers Canal to Engineers Road starting at 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following Wednesday. Road users are advised to stay informed on updates and plan their routes accordingly to avoid delays.
