The small town of Broadview has been thrust into the national spotlight, as Mayor Katrina Thompson declared a civil emergency in response to increasing threats amidst ongoing protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). With tensions running high, the village board meeting scheduled on Monday, November 17, was transitioned to a virtual format for safety, as reported by NBC Chicago.
According to Mayor Thompson, the drastic step was taken following threats that escalated after protesters, many of whom were not Broadview residents, attempted to "storm" Village Hall on Saturday, November 14, 2025. The threats even led to the FBI being informed about a mid-October incident targeting Thompson. Despite the move to hold the meeting remotely, clashes between residents and protesters continued outside Village Hall, with 21 individuals, including clergy members, arrested on Friday prior to the meeting during confrontations at a local ICE facility, as CBS Chicago detailed.
Greg Buchanan, a resident of Broadview, expressed his concern over the rising level of unrest, quoting, "We hear helicopters in the morning time, in the evening time," and lamenting the threats made against their mayor. A protester, identified only as Ian, iterated that their aim was to challenge federal immigration enforcement, not the local governance, telling NBC Chicago, "I'm not trying to make things hard for Broadview. I’m trying to make things hard for ICE."
Meanwhile, Torino Norris, a local business manager, displayed staunch support for the mayor and the community, emphasizing Thompson's support for local and Black businesses. Norris further highlighted the mayor's predicament, stating to CBS Chicago, "It's been a lot of stuff, a lot of negative views towards the mayor, and we're just here to support that and give a positive side," and raising questions regarding the scrutiny faced by the mayor over federal enforcement actions.
