Following the officer-involved shooting in Alpine on Wednesday evening, the California Department of Justice is stepping in to conduct an independent review. According to a statement from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, the incident left an individual dead after a confrontation where a replica firearm was mistakenly identified as a real threat by deputies on the 1700 block of Kyrsten Terrace Ct.
The Sheriff's Office confirmed that Body Worn Camera footage and a Critical Incident Video will be released soon to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Tragically impacted by the loss of life, the community now waits for these materials, expected to shed light on the deputy's actions leading up to the fatal encounter.
Having initiated an investigation as mandated by Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506), the DOJ’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team will take a close look into the shooting, with the findings to be examined by the Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for an independent review.
