Chicago business owners are on alert after a string of commercial robberies in the Loop neighborhood has raised concerns about a pattern of thefts that have shaken the area's sense of security. The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert notifying the public and local businesses of two recent incidents that are believed to be related, marked by a troubling simplicity in their execution.
The first incident occurred on the 0-100 block of W. Lake St on October 22, 2025, at approximately 2:30 p.m., then another on the 100 block of N. Dearborn St on November 6, 2025, at about 8:25 p.m. In both cases, an individual described as an African American male, aged between 30 and 40, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, dark colored sweatpants, and a black baseball cap, entered businesses with the ruse of asking for a glass of water before committing the thefts. According to a Chicago Police Department alert, upon receiving the water in one instance, the man seized a tip jar full of cash and attempted to flee. However, in the more brazen of the two robberies, the same offender threatened to shoot an employee unless they opened the cash register, from which he then took the currency and fled.
Both incidents have prompted area businesses to reassess their security measures. CPD is advising proprietors to ensure the functionality and recording capability of their surveillance equipment. Additionally, the heightened scrutiny includes a call for vigilance and communication amongst neighbors in the business community. The incidents underscore the necessity for preparedness against such deceptive tactics, which can transform mundane moments into ones of crisis.
In line with CPD recommendations, those confronted by an assailant should strive to remain calm. Calling 911 immediately is crucial, as is providing detailed descriptions of the perpetrator, including any distinctive clothing or physical features, as well as any vehicle identifiers. Individuals who witness such an event are encouraged, when possible, to stay on the scene or to provide contact information if they must leave. A crucial point echoed by CPD is the prioritization of safety over heroics: "Never pursue a fleeing assailant, provide the information to the police."
