As Thanksgiving approaches, a number of organizations and establishments across Greater Cincinnati and Northeast Ohio have undertaken significant efforts to provide meals to those in need. The Freestore Foodbank in Cincinnati revealed data showing that one-in-seven people in the area are facing food insecurity, a situation that has been labeled unprecedented by St. Vincent de Paul. This nonprofit will distribute 1,000 meal kits, which include a turkey and fresh produce, starting at 9 a.m. at their Don & Phyllis Neyer Outreach Center, as FOX19 reported.
The Freestore Foodbank itself is facilitating holiday meal distributions at various market locations and off-site throughout November. "Right now, we estimate that at least 82,000 children in our Tri-State are at risk of hunger," Vice President of External Affairs Trisha Rayner told FOX19, announcing multiple dates and locations where the food distribution took place.
Meanwhile, in Northeast Ohio, the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals collaborated to provide Thanksgiving meals and grocery gift cards to more than 4,000 families. Reported by cleveland.com, this philanthropic effort spanned several locations, with Dr. Monica Yepes-Rios of the Cleveland Clinic highlighting the importance of their outreach beyond hospital walls to ensure families could celebrate the holiday without the worry of food.
Complementing these large-scale distributions, small businesses like Good Plates Eatery are also playing their part. The Cincinnati restaurant plans to hand out over 3,200 free Thanksgiving meals, an initiative that owner Andrew Schlanser says has exceeded his expectations. "It's nice to give back to the community, and it's grown into something I would've never guessed," Schlanser conveyed to LOCAL12. Beyond meals, the eatery is accepting donations for a winter coat and toy drive.
These efforts showcase the community's collective endeavor to battle food insecurity around the holiday season. Through the donations of time, resources, and food from various organizations and local businesses, families in need throughout Ohio are receiving a helping hand to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal with less burden.
