Residents of East Hyde Park are on high alert following a string of burglaries reported in the area, according to a recent community alert released by the Chicago Police Department. The 2nd (Wentworth) District has issued notice regarding these incidents, which occurred on the 1700 block of E. 55th St., the 5500 block of S. Hyde Park Blvd., and the 5400 block of S. Everett Ave. on the night of November 24 and the early hours of November 25, 2025.
In each instance, the offender made their way into apartments through unlocked doors or windows before absconding with various items, as the alert described. The crimes all bear a troubling similarity both in method and the close proximity, suggesting a shared perpetrator whose brazen acts under the cover of darkness have left the community rattled. The suspect, a male approximately 20-40 years old and around 6 feet tall, was last seen wearing dark clothing.
Amidst these events, the police department has offered guidance on steps residents can take to protect their homes from such invasions. These include: maintaining well-lit property perimeters, monitoring and promptly reporting any suspicious activity, ensuring that all possible entryways are secured, and the quick repair of any compromised windows, doors, or locks. The department also advises that residents with video surveillance should preserve any footage that could be relevant to the investigation.
Victims of burglary are being urged by the police to avoid disturbing the crime scene and to contact authorities immediately. Furthermore, "if approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information," the advisory stated. With these measures, the community and law enforcement hope to deter further incidents and eventually apprehend the individual responsible for this string of burglaries in East Hyde Park.
