Early this morning, tragedy struck Florida's Turnpike northbound at Mile Marker 1, where a fatal crash prompted authorities to close all lanes, creating an extensive traffic disruption in Homestead. According to NBC Miami, the Florida Highway Patrol was on the scene, investigating the circumstances that led to the accident, while details regarding the cause and the identity of the victim were not immediately available.
The incident, which occurred just before Florida City as drivers emerge from the Keys, was reported around 3 a.m., significantly impacting the early morning commute; as of 7 a.m. the lanes remained shuttered, yielding to the painstaking process of investigation that often follows in the wake of such grievous events, a Miami-Dade medical examiner was on site, and per traffic reports there appeared to be a body on the highway, which usually indicates the crash scenes become protracted tableau of probes and palpable human loss. Drivers faced with the closed lanes were advised by The Miami Herald to use U.S. 1 or Krome Avenue to bypass the closed section of the highway, where they could then rejoin the turnpike to continue their journey northward while southbound lanes on the turnpike extension were open, offering unobstructed passage.
Video footage from the scene showed several Florida Highway Patrol vehicles responding to the incident, which caused a major traffic disruption. The crash shut down the roadway, and drivers were advised to take alternate routes, with U.S. 1 recommended as the main detour.
