Jack's, a name that resonates with San Francisco's rich dining history, is set to chart a new course in its storied journey. Skylight, a venue development firm known for their work on the Ferry Building and the High Line, is at the helm of reviving one of the city's oldest restaurants. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Jack's will reopen on November 18, not as a public dining spot, but as a "civic salon" designed to foster conversation and connection among influencers in various sectors, including tech and the arts.
The venue, located at 615 Sacramento St., has a history that stretches back to 1864, with George Voges at its founding. However, the restaurant, in its new avatar, will also serve as a private events space to some extent. Skylight CEO Stephanie Blake believes that Jack's will continue "as an important civic hub for San Francisco at a time when the city is grappling with its political identity, the influx of AI and other major shifts." Nevertheless, a touch of nostalgia will still be on the menu, featuring French bistro food crafted by Michelin-starred chef Rupert Blease and San Francisco chef Tommy Halvorson, although this time, it'll be primarily for those attending events, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
The legacy of Jack's includes decision-making that profoundly impacted the Bay Area, with the likes of the 1915 World’s Fair in San Francisco and the construction of the Transamerica Pyramid reportedly being hashed out within its walls. Skylight highlighted these historical moments in a statement, as per the San Francisco Chronicle, as they try to maintain the space's legacy as a "shadow civic hall."
John Konstin, who refurbished Jack's in 1996 and whose father worked there as a waiter, compared the restaurant to quintessential San Francisco landmarks such as the cable car or the Golden Gate Bridge. "I've been saying that someone needs to revitalize that restaurant for decades, so I'm glad it's happening," Konstin told The SF Standard, echoing the sentiments of many who've seen the various incarnations of Jack's throughout the years.
