A late-night disturbance at Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, NY ended tragically when a 45-year-old man wielding a knife was fatally shot by a hospital security guard. The incident, which took place around 11 p.m. last night, began when the man, identified as Carlos Ortiz, pulled a fire alarm in the emergency room lobby, creating a chaotic scene.
According to NBC New York, Ortiz subsequently attacked a security guard with a knife, prompting the guard to quickly fire a single round. In the wake of the shooting, police and firefighters, who had already been dispatched to the scene due to the alarm, continued to secure the area. Ortiz was pronounced dead later, adding to a history of violence that seems always to circle back to the very institutions meant to heal.
A bystander, a woman whose name has not been disclosed, also suffered injuries during the altercation but is anticipated to recover fully.
