Last night, a tragic incident unfolded in the Midway District at the intersection of Hancock Street and Camino Del Rio West, where a fatal collision claimed the life of a 33-year-old male pedestrian. According to a press release sent via email by the San Diego Police Department (SDPD), a 55-year-old female was driving her BMW SUV northbound on Camino Del Rio West at approximately 23:16 when the accident occurred. The driver, approaching a green traffic signal light at Hancock St., was suddenly confronted by the pedestrian who ran east across the intersection against the red “don’t walk” signal and was subsequently struck by the vehicle.
The report, overseen by Officer D. O'Brien, indicated that the victim was immediately transported to a local hospital by ambulance. Despite the rapid response and medical efforts, he was pronounced deceased. Running across the intersection, the pedestrian, whose identity has not been disclosed, disregarded the signaling, which ultimately led to this unfortunate event. The SDPD Traffic Division is currently investigating the collision and has determined that alcohol was not a factor in the driver's involvement in the accident.
