In a gesture of deep respect, Miami Beach prepares to dedicate a Blue and Gold Star Memorial Marker this Sunday, Nov. 9, giving tangible form to the community's reverence for its military servicemen and women. The ceremony, slated for 3 p.m. at Canopy Park, located at 701 West Ave., will precede the city's annual Veterans Day celebrations. In collaboration with the Miami Beach Garden Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3559, they will present a dual homage to those who have donned the nation's uniform and those who have laid down their lives for their compatriots.
Commissioner Alex Fernandez, as reported by the City of Miami Beach website, was a key proponent of the event, stating, "These markers will remind everyone who visits Canopy Park of the brave men and women who put their lives at risk for the freedoms that we continue to enjoy today"; the Blue Star Program acknowledges service members while the Gold Star aspect pays tribute to those fallen, the markers themselves will be permanently exhibited on a keystone in the park, and Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner reflected on the nation's enduring spirit of courage, discipline, and sacrifice as foundational to its strength and liberty.
Canopy Park stands as a significant locus for Gold Star recognition within Miami-Dade County, being the first to host a Gold Star Marker in an area with existing tributes such as the Miami-Dade Military Museum and Memorial's Gold Star Monument. Sunday's solemn dedication will feature a culturally resonant bagpipe procession and a trumpeter, accompanied by words from local officials and esteemed guests, with the members of VFW Post 3559 actively participating in the day's proceedings.
