The Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust (MDEAT) has launched its inaugural MDEAT Activist Awards, set to recognize the tireless efforts of nonprofit organizations working to improve opportunities and bolster economic mobility throughout the Miami-Dade area. According to the county's recent release, this new initiative focuses on honoring these groups for their work in line with MDEAT's objectives to push economic development, provide better housing access, and empower the youth via key programs and services.
"From Ancestry to Advocacy" serves as the prevailing theme of these awards, meant to acknowledge the inherited legacy of previous community activists while showcasing the current organizations taking the baton to continue enacting meaningful change. Bill Diggs, Executive Director of MDEAT, emphasized the significance of the awards, "The Activist Awards highlight the nonprofits that are opening pathways to opportunity in Miami-Dade," and he further insisted this involvement ensures that the community participates directly in uplifting organizations deemed most impactful in strengthening the county. Miami-Dade residents have the chance to vote for their preferred nonprofits from Tuesday through Monday, November 24, where an Established Nonprofit and an Emerging Organization will receive honors for their influential roles both old and new in shaping the locale's course, as noted by the county's website.
The awards ceremony beckons the community to the Marshall L. Davis African Cultural Arts Center on December 3, providing a platform for local leaders, partners, and residents to commemorate the progress made by organizations steadfast in fulfilling MDEAT's mission. As noted in the release, attendance is free, and prospective attendees are welcome to register for the event through the provided link.
Media are invited to attend the MDEAT Activist Awards, with reporters asked to confirm their attendance and schedule interviews in advance through Sharelle Barton, the event’s point of contact. Residents also have a role in selecting awardees through a voting process.
