In response to the ongoing needs of Miami-Dade County residents, Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins has organized the District 8 Thanksgiving Turkey Drive. Scheduled for Friday at the South Dade Government Center in Cutler Bay, the event is poised to support local families during the festive season. In an announcement, Commissioner Cohen Higgins emphasized the event's role in fostering community spirit and assisting those in need.
"Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, compassion, and community," Commissioner Cohen Higgins expressed. Meals will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10 a.m., with attendees recommended to arrive early to ensure they receive assistance. The drive is especially significant this year due to the interruptions in federal assistance caused by the government shutdown, impacting residents who rely on SNAP benefits, as mentioned on the county's website.
Gratitude was extended to sponsors and community partners whose vital support facilitates the distribution of hundreds of meals. "Their partnership makes it possible for us to serve hundreds of families and strengthen the bonds that make District 8 such a special place to call home," Commissioner Cohen Higgins stated.
