Just ahead of the anticipated Thanksgiving travel rush, Miami International Airport (MIA), teamed up with Delta Air Lines and LATAM Airlines to give over 150 children with disabilities a unique preview into the world of flying. This marks the latest in a series of MIA Airport Instruction and Readiness (MIAair) tours designed to demystify air travel for young passengers with special needs. The airport's initiative allowed the children, accompanied by their families, teachers, and guardians, to calmly walk through the entire flying process, boarding a LATAM aircraft without the usual hustle and stress.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava praised the efforts of the organizations involved, emphasizing the county's dedication to accessibility. "We strive to make Miami-Dade County services as accessible as possible to all of our residents, which is why I am so proud of MIA's successful efforts to empower travelers with disabilities through its award-winning MIAair tour program," she said. With such efforts in mind, the tour was organized to allow children to confidently and comfortably get to quickly learn the ins and outs of air travel, circumventing potential barriers that could dim the lights of their holiday spirits, as per the county's announcement.

The hands-on experience included navigating through the airport to get boarding passes, moving smoothly through security, and getting a feel for boarding planes with LATAM's gate agents and flight crews on hand to guide them. The event wasn't only beneficial for the kids and their caregivers. It also served as a critical learning opportunity for MIA and airline staffers, suggesting a mutual growth towards understanding and providing a supportive travel environment for passengers with disabilities.

The MIAair program, launched in 2015 and conducted in partnership with the UM-NSU Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD), has now introduced nearly 400 children with disabilities to the skies. Delta Air Lines' Managing Director of Accessibility Programs, Alison Lathrop, reinforced the company's commitment. "Thank you to our partners at Miami International Airport and LATAM for investing their facilities and their hearts in accessible travel," Lathrop said. "Travel is for everyone, and we're delighted to spread a little cheer and make the travel experience more familiar and accessible for to these kids and their families this holiday season," as noted by the county's announcement.

LATAM Airlines, represented by Cristina De Melo, VP North America & Caribbean, echoed the sentiment of collective effort towards a more inclusive experience. "We are delighted to take part in this event that brings together so many children and their families," De Melo shared, highlighting LATAM's ongoing commitment to accessible travel through initiatives for individuals with disabilities and partnerships aimed at enhancing understanding of hidden disabilities and autism spectrum conditions, according to the same press release. More information about the MIAair program can be found on the MIAair webpage.
