A routine grocery run turned violent Tuesday morning when at least two adults were shot inside the Bronzeville Jewel-Osco at 443 E. 34th St. A woman was hit in the left foot and a man in the upper left arm; both were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Police locked down the store and interviewed witnesses, but their conditions weren’t immediately available.
Police radio and early reports
Police radio traffic and initial dispatch logs put the shooting around 11:20 a.m. and indicated a third person may have suffered a graze wound while a Jewel employee reportedly fell down a stairwell amid the chaos, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The Sun-Times also reported that both wounded adults were transported to UChicago’s hospital and noted the incident was still developing. Authorities had not released the victims’ names or a suspect description at the time.
Recent shootings in the neighborhood
Bronzeville has grappled with several high-profile shootings this year, including an August attack that wounded five and likewise sent victims to the University of Chicago Medical Center—fueling long-running worries about daytime gunfire on the South Side. After that mass shooting, community leaders pressed for stronger patrols and more resources, Block Club Chicago reported. Neighbors say Tuesday’s violence is likely to turn up the pressure again on police and City Hall.
Investigation underway
Area detectives are handling the case, and police have not announced arrests or charges, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Officials asked anyone with information to contact CPD detectives; the paper said updates would follow as the investigation continues. Store management had not issued a public statement as of the Sun-Times report.
