Commuters in Prescott have a reason to cheer as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announces the completion of a significant expansion on State Route 69. The $9.8 million project, finished in partnership with the Central Yavapai Metropolitan Planning Organization, was designed to increase the capacity of the highway. A third travel lane has now been added in each direction between Prescott Lakes Parkway and Frontier Village, spanning a mile from mileposts 294 to 295.
The improvements are not only set to ease traffic but also to bolster safety. A raised center median has been constructed to reduce the risk of accidents along the stretch. The developments were part of an ambitious initiative that began back in July 2024, aiming to seamlessly carry more vehicles and diminish bottlenecks. Although it has taken over a year to complete, the anticipation is that the newly widened road will significantly relieve congestion in this busy corridor of Prescott.
Beyond widening, the project encompassed a slew of enhancements. According to ADOT's statement, work crews installed new pipe culverts and storm drains critical for managing the heavy monsoon rains Arizona is known for. A traffic signal removal and upgrade was also part of the package, alongside the introduction of fresh signage and striping to guide the increased flow of traffic.
