The latest incident occurred on October 17, when a white 2005-2010 Chevrolet Silverado pulled up to the Imperial Beach Library just shy of 11:00 PM. Captured on surveillance, the suspect stole a bronze plaque, valued at around $4,500, which the suspect placed in the bed of the truck before driving off.
This string of thefts, as reported by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, appears to be interwoven with similar crimes reported at libraries in Lemon Grove, Rancho San Diego, Alpine, and 4S Ranch. The Imperial Beach Library heist specifically involved a bald White male suspect, aged 40 to 50, clad in a dark sweatshirt, gray shorts, and dark sneakers.
The stolen plaque is not only a financial loss but part of the communal narratives these public spaces hold dear. Wrapped in a dark-colored sweatshirt, gray shorts, and sneakers, the unmasked male operates with bold indifference to cultural memory. His vehicle, a single-cab Chevrolet Silverado, sports a steel front bumper.
