The holiday season is notorious for increasing both shopper turnout and criminal activity. Recognizing this, Shelby County has unleashed 'Operation Jingle Bells', a law enforcement initiative designed to beef up security around high-volume shopping areas. According to Action News 5, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) has deployed additional deputies aiming to stamp out property crime and ensure shopper safety.
Following a recent shooting incident at Wolfchase Galleria, there's a palpable ramp-up in security presence as shoppers hunt for holiday bargains. ABC24 detailed, the SCSO collaboration with the National Guard has expanded the footprint of Operation Jingle Bells. This meld of forces has left some shoppers feeling more at ease, with resident Aaron Hicks expressing his sense of safety unaware of the recent mall violence, stating, "Man, that's awful; prayers to all the families involved," when informed about the incident.
The focus of this operation encompasses the deterrence of crime in areas thick with holiday shoppers. Lieutenant Calvin Grantham emphasized the proactive approach, explaining deputies are on the lookout for any signs of suspicious behavior. "We're looking for large groups of people who might be looking to break into vehicles. We're looking for vehicles that look like they are casing the shopping area," Lt. Grantham told ABC24. This enhancement of law enforcement is not only about curbing crime but also about instilling a sense of safety among shoppers.
Moreover, as reported by WREG, Operation Jingle Bells is a month-long strategy, this year running through December 28, and is a coordinated effort with multiple local law enforcement agencies, including the Memphis and Bartlett Police Departments, among others. Lt. Grantham also shared some practical advice for shoppers: "Make sure you’re not sitting around in your vehicles too long, don’t leave valuables exposed in plain view in your cars, and just try not to make yourself a victim, as well," highlighting personal responsibility in crime prevention.
SCSO is urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities near local shopping centers throughout the holiday season. The presence of a significant law enforcement contingent, including the National Guard in specific areas, is expected to significantly deter potential criminals, allowing shoppers to focus on the festivities and joys that come with the season's spirit.
