Two people were killed and two others were seriously injured early yesterday morning in a series of wrong-way crashes on the Florida Turnpike in Southwest Miami-Dade.

Florida Highway Patrol reported that a blue Honda traveling south in the northbound lanes near Bird Road collided head-on with a silver Toyota. Both vehicles were left disabled and blocking traffic. As WSVN reported, shortly after, a white Toyota, also traveling the wrong way, struck the wrecked vehicles and a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser that had responded to the scene.

NBC Miami footage showed the white Toyota crashing into the disabled vehicles, including the blue Honda. The trooper at the scene was outside the cruiser at the time and was not injured.

The survivors from the white Toyota were airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital with serious injuries. The names of the deceased have not been released. Northbound lanes were closed and traffic was diverted onto Bird Road as authorities investigated the cause of the crash, which remains under investigation.
