Uber is revamping the rideshare experience for women with the launch of its “Women Preferences” feature, an option providing female passengers the choice to match with female drivers. This initiative, rolled out to 26 new cities including Salt Lake City and Houston, is designed to offer women more choice and confidence while navigating the platform. According to ABC4, approximately 75% of women riders expressed support for the option to match with women drivers, prompting the company to create an environment that prioritizes comfort and safety.
The feature is not only beneficial to the women riders but also supports women drivers who may prefer driving other women, especially during peak earning hours, such as evenings. As reported by CW39 Houston, the program is also being extended to teen accounts, thereby allowing parents or guardians to facilitate a smoother ride experience for their teenage children by requesting a woman driver.
For those seeking immediate rides or planning, the options are flexible and adaptive. "Women Drivers" will now appear as an alternative when demanding a ride through the app. Should wait times prove longer than expected, riders have the contingency to select a different ride for faster service. And for those who desire to ensure consistent preferences, the app settings now include a “Women Preference” option, which, as FOX13 points out, doesn’t guarantee but increases the odds of matching with a woman driver.
On the driver’s side, the integration is equally straightforward. Women drivers can activate the "Women Rider Preference" feature within their app settings, connecting them exclusively with women's ride requests. This setting, however, is not set in stone; it can be deactivated at any time, allowing drivers to receive requests from all riders. Uber aims to attract more women to the driving platform by promoting these options nationwide, as they continue to develop features that cater to specific demographics within their customer base.
