In the spirit of the holiday, the communities of West Park and Pembroke Park have again opened their hearts and resources to ensure their residents can enjoy a bountiful Thanksgiving. This year, as families continue to face the crunch of high grocery prices and the aftermath of a government shutdown, the gesture holds significant weight. According to WSVN, the City of West Park, in collaboration with "Farm Share," organized their 15th annual event to distribute essential Thanksgiving meals to locals.
"We're always just willing to find ways to bless our residents, and so what better way to do it during these hard times to be able to put some food on their tables," West Park Mayor Felicia Brunson told WSVN. Each resident who attended the event received turkey, chicken, and a variety of fresh vegetables, ensuring the traditional holiday fixings were within reach.
Meanwhile, just a short drive away, the Town of Pembroke Park facilitated a drive-thru Thanksgiving event, providing not only turkeys but a bag of sides including mashed potatoes, cornbread mix, and canned vegetables. Joe Donzelli, associated with the town, highlighted the importance of the event to Local 10, "What we are seeing is that the need that started a few years ago," explaining how the pandemic exacerbated the community's hardships.
Residents expressed profound gratitude for the assistance. "I come by and get what they give me and I am very, very grateful for it," shared resident Ed Maley in a statement obtained by Local 10. In West Park, the sentiment was echoed, with resident Margaret Sainvilus telling the news outlet, "I’m grateful, I love this neighborhood. I think it is a wonderful thing to be blessed with some food. Being on a fixed income, it makes a big difference."
Local volunteers, including Local 10's Aaron Maybin, assisted during the events, showcasing the community's unity and compassion. West Park's Mayor Brunson also stressed the issue of food insecurity in her locality during her speech at the event.
