An 81-year-old Massachusetts woman met a tragic end on the Maine Turnpike yesterday. Janice Goldsmith of Needham was driving her 2014 Toyota sedan when she collided with the rear of a stalled tractor-trailer, Maine State Police have stated, as reported by WCVB.
The accident occurred around 3:14 p.m. near Mile 5 southbound in York. The tractor-trailer had experienced a mechanical failure and pulled into the breakdown lane. Despite the driver's compliance with safety regulations, placing reflective warning triangles to alert other motorists, the Toyota still crashed into the larger vehicle. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by state police.
Goldsmith was pronounced dead at the scene, her life cut short on an otherwise unremarkable stretch of highway. Details provided by NBC Boston indicate that the tractor-trailer was a 2022 Western Star. The specific nature of the mechanical malfunction has not been disclosed.
The aftermath of the crash saw traffic restricted to one lane for about three hours. This was followed by an additional two-hour period where only two lanes were accessible, before the southbound side of the turnpike was fully reopened. Emergency crews worked diligently at the scene to manage the traffic flow and investigate the circumstances that led to this unfortunate event.
