Over the weekend, an attentive citizen led to the apprehension of a mail theft suspect in American Canyon. The vigilant resident noticed a suspicious vehicle lingering near mailboxes on Crawford Way at the early hours of Sunday prompting a call to local authorities about the unusual activity in light of recent thefts. As mentioned on a social media post by the American Canyon Police Department, the caller observed the car parked repeatedly at times uncharacteristic for postage drop-off or retrieval.
Upon arrival, officers found and identified a BMW as described by the citizen, with 43-year-old Dario Flores-Perez from Los Angeles at the wheel. Already on probation for identity theft, Flores-Perez was subjected to a search, which escalated quickly into an arrest. Scouring the vehicle, law enforcement unearthed a cache of opened mail not belonging to him, along with personal IDs, checks of others, and an illegal substance. Adding further to the findings, they also encountered a makeshift mail "fishing" tool, designed to extract contents from the collection boxes nefariously.
The collaborative effort between the community and police resulted in Flores-Perez facing multiple charges, including identity theft, possession of stolen property, and a controlled substance. He was booked at the Napa County Department of Corrections, with the case still under investigation.
