The Missouri Department of Transportation announced that concrete pavement repairs will take place on Interstate 70 near Route Z on the evenings of Dec. 22 and 23. MoDOT warns that these repairs will lead to lane closures affecting both the eastbound and westbound directions of the interstate, and motorists are advised to allow extra travel time.

On Monday, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., expect one lane on eastbound I-70 just east of the Route Z bridge to be out of commission. Things get a bit more complicated on Tuesday, when not only will one westbound I-70 lane just west of the Route Z bridge close from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., but the left lane of eastbound I-70 will also temporarily shut down from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. The closure intends to accommodate concrete trucks in the work zone.

This inconvenience is part of a larger scheme, the Improve I-70 Warrenton to Wentzville Project, which aims to revitalize the eastern portion of I-70. The project commenced following its award in November 2024, with tentative construction dates spanning 2025 to 2028.

Moving beyond momentary traffic disruptions, Missouri's FY2024 budget has laid the financial groundwork for an expansive overhaul of I-70. According to the MoDOT website, $2.8 billion in General Revenue has been earmarked to carve a third lane through I-70 across Missouri, enhancing nearly 200 miles of this critical thoroughfare from Blue Springs to Wentzville.
