The Canyon School District's Purchasing Department is refreshing classrooms and giving public property a second life by selling surplus items online, reports Canyons District News. From stacks of iPads to unique artwork, these products, first offered to other schools and departments, are then available for the general public to bid on if unclaimed. As Nancy Webb, the Purchasing Director of Canyons School District, stated, "Our department handles anything a school could need," as per Canyons District News.
These surplus sales not only support the District's General Fund but also offer a deal for community members. Still imbued with purpose, office furniture, vehicles, art, and electronics find their way to new homes. For items like the "lot of iPads" that come up for grabs, they become a systematic win for school budgets and local bargain hunters, as Webb said, "Any money that is made on surplus goes back to the [District’s] General Fund, which goes straight back to the schools," as obtained by the Canyons District News.
However, it's not just about the savings. The program recovers value from items that taxpayers initially funded, and as a requirement of state laws, these pieces of public property must have their value maximized. By selling them, the district also aids environmental conservation efforts by reducing waste and promoting reuse.
