Chicagoans are bracing themselves for a return to winter conditions today, with forecasts promising a brief cold snap before milder weather reclaims the city next week. According to the National Weather Service, today will start off mostly cloudy, then gradually become sunny, although high temperatures will hover near 24 degrees with wind chill values dipping as low as -5. Winds could reach up to 35 mph, adding an extra bite to the air.
Tonight, the chill will persist, but temperatures are expected to rise to around 29 by the early morning. As reported bythe National Weather Service, the city will see south winds of 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Looking ahead to the weekend, a high near 40 is predicted for Saturday, with breezy conditions continuing and winds shifting from south to west in the afternoon.
Adding a local angle, FOX 32 Chicago indicates that while today's flurries and wind are indicative of winter's grip, the forecast shows a promising shift towards warmer weather after the weekend. Saturday might bring a "light mix of precipitation around midday," but this is expected to clear up well before the evening's Bears game.
Behind another cold front, Sunday's high temperatures will struggle to get close to 30 degrees. But the chill is set to lift starting Monday, with partly cloudy skies and highs moving into the upper 30s. "Onward and upward starting on Monday," as FOX 32 Chicago aptly notes, signaling a trend toward milder temperatures as Christmas approaches.
Looking forward to Christmas week, the National Weather Service forecasts consistent cloud cover with high temperatures progressively climbing, reaching the mid-40s by Tuesday and nearing 50 by Wednesday. The chance of rain under mostly cloudy skies on Wednesday night sets the stage for what could be a wet Christmas Eve. Nonetheless, Christmas Day itself promises otherwise unseasonably mild conditions, with highs forecast in the 50s and partly sunny skies, completing a swift transition from winter's chill to a more temperate holiday atmosphere.
