The streets of Chicago's 6th (Gresham) District will see an increased police presence this weekend as officers conduct a DUI Saturation Patrol. As noted by the Chicago Police Department's announcement, the operation is set to commence on the evening of December 26, 2025, from 6 p.m., running through the early hours of December 27, until 2 a.m.

The primary goal of this initiative, looking to monitor vehicular traffic with heightened vigilance, is to curtail impaired driving instances. Contained within the routine of officers are efforts to enforce laws related to speed, alcohol consumption, and the use of safety belts. The BAT (Breath Alcohol Testing) Mobile Unit stands at the ready, geared toward streamlining the DUI charge process on-the-spot, without the delay imposed by the traditional journey to lockup facilities.

Such saturation patrols are not without precedent. The Chicago Police released data on the outcome of a similar operation in the 17th (Albany Park) District, held on December 19-20. Amongst the outcomes announced were six citations for seat belt violations and one for a suspended or revoked license. Offenses amounted to a total of 20 citations, but, interestingly, included zero counts for actual DUIs or unsafe vehicle violations, as per their record.

Additionally, one distracted driving violation was reported, with a dozen other traffic violations adding to the tally. Despite deploying vehicles equipped for speed detection, the Chicago Police did not tow any vehicles or record speed violations. The indicated efficiency and speed of such operations, enabled by the BAT Mobile Unit, allow for accused individuals to receive Individual Recognizance Bonds on-site, thereby potentially diminishing the strain on local detention facilities.

As Chicagoans plan their post-Christmas weekend festivities, those in the Gresham area might anticipate encountering DUI checkpoints or being subject to routine traffic stops. Though the emphasis is on preventing the irresponsible melding of alcohol with driving, all motorists should be mindful of the complete spectrum of traffic laws to avoid citations or legal entanglements. And while some might argue against the saturation patrol method as a means of law enforcement, it is embedded within Chicago's strategy to promote roadway safety and responsibility.
