Clackamas County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Ausmus was honored with the Distinguished Service Award at last week’s Oregon State Sheriffs' Association Awards Banquet for his life-saving response to a critical incident involving a three-year-old child. Ausmus arrived within three minutes and applied a tourniquet to the child’s severely injured leg after the boy was run over by a riding lawn mower, as reported by the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
Clackamas Fire Lieutenant Mike Gasperson said Ausmus’ actions were “critical in controlling life-threatening hemorrhage and giving the child a fighting chance at survival.” The child’s father later shared that doctors expect a full recovery with use of both legs, crediting Deputy Ausmus’ rapid response and professional care, as stated by the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
Deputy Ausmus remained calm during the incident and provided effective care until paramedics arrived, the Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association said. The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office also encouraged the public to download the ClackCo Sheriff App for iOS and Android, which provides real-time alerts, safety tips, and news, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office on their Facebook page.
