Residents in several Chicago neighborhoods are on high alert following a spree of forceful burglaries reported by local authorities. The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert for those living in specific beats within the 1st, 2nd, 22nd, and 24th Districts. The crimes, which occurred in the early morning hours, saw offenders—described as two to four African American males, between 16 and 25 years old—smashing their way into various establishments to rob them.
The burglaries were carried out with a significant amount of coordination. Offenders arrived in a stolen vehicle, armed with hammers or similar blunt objects to force entry. Once inside, they took "several amounts of USC, large fire extinguishers, small deposit boxes," before fleeing the scene, as stated in a recent police notice. The incidents occurred across a number of locations, including the 1500 block of S. Michigan Ave., the 600 block of S. Clark St., and others, spanning from the Near South Side to Rogers Park.
Authorities have offered a description of the suspects, emphasizing that they wore all-black hoodies, dark pants, black shoes, ski masks, and gloves. They have been observed to depart swiftly in their vehicle, a hallmark of their operation's efficiency. In response to these crimes, the police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and to keep their friends and family informed.
In addition to staying alert, the police advice calls for community members to avoid engaging with individuals attempting to make spontaneous conversation that might seem suspicious. They also stress the importance of remaining calm if confronted, and appeal for witnesses or victims to immediately call 911 with detailed descriptions of the offenders—including vehicle information. "If you are a victim, try not touch anything and contact the police immediately," advises the Chicago Police Department notification.
