The Department of the Interior is officially transferring jurisdiction of approximately 760 acres of public land across San Diego and Imperial Counties to the Department of the Navy, as announced earlier this month. For a period of three years, the Navy will utilize these lands to establish a National Defense Area, aimed at bolstering ongoing border security efforts.
"President Trump has made it clear that securing our border and restoring American sovereignty are top national priorities," Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum stated, per the U.S. Department of the Interior. The objective is to plug long-standing security gaps, thereby not just enhancing border integrity but also protecting the land from the fallouts of illegal activity. The land transfer spans an area from the boundaries of the Otay Mountain Wilderness to roughly a mile west of where California kisses the Arizona state line, a corridor notorious for illicit crossings and consequent national security concerns.
Citing historical precedents, the land originally set aside by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1907 for border protection will now serve the Navy to enhance operational capabilities while allegedly mitigating the environmental impact of unauthorized border crossings. In coordination with the Department of the Interior, the Navy is ensuring that the initiative is both legal and focused.
According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Burgum emphasized that this partnership with the Navy not only reinforces our national defense but also respects the historic role public lands have played in maintaining national sovereignty. The intent is to simultaneously safeguard Americans while addressing environmental wear that the sustained illegal activity in these areas has accelerated.
