In a recent incident at a Gilroy Safeway, a day that began with the routine hum of shoppers and beeping cash registers spiraled into a scene of violence. Yesterday, the Gilroy Police Department responded to a distressing call: a man had been stabbed inside the grocery store at the 900 block of First Street. As reported in a social media post from the Gilroy Police Department, 31-year-old Derek Bell was arrested in connection with the attack.
Officers who arrived quickly at the scene were able to detain Bell shortly after he exited the establishment. According to the authorities, the situation unfolded when Bell, upon entering an employee-only section, was confronted and asked to leave. An assault on a female employee followed, involving the hurling of an object, subsequently injuring her. As another employee intervened to eject Bell, he allegedly resorted to using a knife, stabbing the 51-year-old man.
The victim of the stabbing was promptly taken to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The Gilroy Police have since held Bell on suspicion of attempted murder, now awaiting further legal action at the Santa Clara County Jail.
