Indiana University's Fernando Mendoza has been named one of the esteemed finalists for the 2025 Heisman Trophy, projecting him into the national spotlight along with Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love, and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin. FOX59 reported the news, spotlighting Mendoza's achievements, which include 33 touchdown passes and 240 rushing yards, leading the Hoosiers to their first No. 1 ranking and a pristine 13-0 record.
The quarterback's performance has been nothing short of stellar this season, closing with a critical victory in the Big Ten Championship. As The Herald-Times noted, Mendoza's father, Fernando Mendoza IV, described the Heisman nomination as "all surreal," while sharing an emotional moment after the championship game with the Mendoza family in attendance. The player's mother, Elsa Mendoza, referred to the achievement as a collective success, praising the support and development the IU team has provided her son.
Mendoza's on-field brilliance and ability to stay cool under pressure during high-stakes matches have caught the attention of many. As reported by WTHR, IU Head Coach Curt Cignetti has lauded Mendoza for his playmaking capabilities, especially praising his proficiency with the long ball. It is such these attributes that have led to a groundswell of support among IU fans, with some even considering naming their firstborn after Mendoza.
While Mendoza garners attention, fellow finalist Jeremiyah Love has also had an impressive year, with the Notre Dame running back tallying up 1,372 rushing yards and scoring 18 touchdowns. Love's performance, however, has not been enough to carry the Irish to the College Football Playoff, with Notre Dame declining a bowl game invitation, amplifying the Heisman stakes for the other finalists. The winner will be announced on Saturday, in a highly anticipated ceremony at the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room in New York, as reported by The Herald-Times.
