Continuing a 17-year tradition, the restaurant served at least 3,500 meals this Christmas, embodying the ethos of community support in a tangible feast of fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, among other hearty dishes. WISH-TV reported that owner Cynthia Wright-Wilson highlighted the collaborative nature of the event, "It’s a community effort, and it’s a lot of businesses that have supported us, and it’s just wonderful," she said.
The preparation and delivery process required an early start and a slew of volunteers who passionately engaged in the Giveback. Volunteers have come to see this service as a key part of their identity. Blake Neely, who has been volunteering since childhood, has now extended his philanthropic efforts to Denver, Colorado. "It becomes a part of you at a certain point," Blake told WISH-TV. Such individual stories of giving back closely intertwine with the restaurant’s mission to make a difference within their own community.
On the culinary side, volunteers like Mark Webster, owner/operator of Real Taste Catering, assisted in the kitchen, preparing a staggering amount of food—"We're frying 9,000 chicken wings," Webster told WTHR. The volunteers also ensured that those unable to visit the restaurant did not go without by organizing deliveries all over the city.
Meanwhile, on Christmas Eve, the Indy restaurant Gather 22 offered a contrasting but equally communal experience with their tiki-themed pop-up. Seeking to provide some warmth through the holiday chill, Gather 22's tropical-themed décor and special menu aimed to give patrons a break from the seasonal stress. Owner Pablo Gonzalez hopes such ventures will continue to draw support for local businesses during the slower months, expressing his joy when his restaurant is filled with laughter, saying, "it just fuels my happiness and lets me know that we're doing something right," FOX59 reported.
