In the spirit of the holiday season, the Maple Grove Police Department's annual Shop with a Cop event brought festive cheer to local families in need. The department shared on social media that the event, held on December 17, provided twenty-three children from fourteen families with a unique shopping experience.
According to the Maple Grove Police Department's Facebook page, the success of the initiative was due in part to the "ongoing strong partnerships" with community organizations. Walmart made a notable contribution with a $1,000 donation, supporting the endeavor along with First Student Bus, Caribou Coffee, PetSmart, and Life Assembly Church. Pastor Dale DeMell and five members from his congregation were on hand to wrap gifts and contribute to the holiday spirit, a gesture that was warmly received by the participating families.
The holiday event was further enhanced by the inclusion of an embedded social worker, Mari Uutala, who joined the police department's team this year. The social media post praised Uutala's contribution, noting it as an "excellent addition to engage with our youth and understand the needs of families in our community." Her involvement reflects a concerted effort to strengthen community ties and support through personalized engagement.
In addition to shopping sprees, the families received holiday meal vouchers compliments of Hy-Vee, offering a more comprehensive form of support during a time that can be financially straining.
