The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) is making impressive strides with its Capital Improvement Program (CIP), surpassing the $600 million mark for the second year in a row in construction projects. Last fiscal year, WASD executed a noteworthy $603 million in infrastructure upgrades aimed at securing Miami-Dade County's water quality and wastewater services for its burgeoning population.
These efforts can be seen as part of the department's ambitious $8.97 billion multi-year CIP, which is significantly backed by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. "As your water warrior, I am a champion for ensuring reliable access to clean water as both a public health necessity and as an economic driver that supports a thriving community," Mayor Levine Cava stated, highlighting the initiative's role in fortifying the county against future challenges. Nearly $2.8 billion of these investments were prioritized during her administration, aiming for long-term resiliency and sustainability in the region's water systems, as per a press release by the county.
The CIP's focus areas include climate-ready design features, expansion of capacity, reinforcement of vulnerable infrastructure, and the adoption of novel technologies. These enhancements are positioned to assure dependable service stretching into the future decades, considering Miami-Dade's continual growth and the increasing demands on its water and sewer systems.
WASD Director Jay J. Fink, P.E., shared his optimism, attributing much of the CIP's breakthrough to Mayor Levine Cava's dedication and the county's water professionals. "Mayor Cava’s unwavering support has been instrumental to our success," Fink articulated. The department remains geared to maintain their high service standards and pursue further advancements in their water-related initiatives, as noted by the county's website.
