The spirit of Hanukkah in Miami has been marred by acts of vandalism on prominent symbols of the celebration. Surveillance footage from the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector's Office, as reported by NBC6, shows a man desecrating a menorah that was on display following the office’s inaugural Hanukkah ceremony. The video shows the man uprooting the menorah and throwing it to the ground, resulting in its bulbs being ripped from their sockets.

Following the incident, Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez expressed his dismay and stand against the vandalism. "This despicable act of vandalism against our menorah is an attack on the values of faith, perseverance, and unity that Hanukkah represents and that we celebrated together just days ago. We unequivocally stand with the Jewish community in Miami-Dade County and across the nation. Hate has no home here. Light will always prevail over darkness, and we will not be intimidated. The only way to fight darkness is with light, and I will do that every single day of my life," Fernandez told NBC6

In a separate, yet equally disheartening event, the iconic seashell menorah, a hallmark of Miami Beach’s Hanukkah celebrations, was found wrecked in storage, announced via the Miami Herald. This striking piece, which has become unusable for the festival this year, will now require restoration, city officials have stated.

City officials, having found the ruined menorah, are already discussing plans to collaborate with the original artist to breathe new life into the artifact. The details of the restoration are still forming.
