A late-night argument on a Grand Crossing block erupted into gunfire overnight Saturday, leaving a 39-year-old man fighting for his life and another person in police custody, authorities said.
Officers responded around midnight to reports of shots fired in the 6600 block of South Stewart Avenue, where they found the man with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to UChicago Medicine in critical condition, according to police.
Investigators said the victim and another person were arguing when the confrontation turned physical. During the struggle, a gun was produced, and the 39-year-old was shot. Detectives arrived at the scene, and one person was taken into custody as charges remained pending, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Scene and police response
Officers taped off the block as evidence technicians documented the scene and searched for shell casings and other clues. Detectives canvassed the area and spoke with residents and witnesses who had gathered near the police line.

Detectives with the department’s bureau of detectives are handling the case. As of the Tribune’s report, the person in custody had not yet been formally charged. Police told the Chicago Tribune that “charges are pending.”
