A deadly house fire in Whitehaven has claimed the life of one individual and left a firefighter with minor injuries, as reported by the Memphis Fire Department. The fire, which occurred last Saturday night at a home on Clarice Drive, led to one casualty who was found inside the residence and pronounced dead at the scene, according to Action News 5.
The Memphis Fire Department was alerted to the blaze around 9:53 p.m., arriving to scenes of "heavy fire conditions"; the inferno had unleashed its fury on the home, the flames consuming it with unforgiving intensity, according to a briefing given by the department. A firefighter sustained a burn to the left hand while working to extinguish the fire, they've since been treated and released from medical care. In the chaos of flame and smoke, the promise of shelter was turned to rubble with damages estimated at $74,000, Local Memphis has reported.
Investigators have traced the origin of the fire to an attached utility room, although the details of what caused the tragedy are still being examined. The fatality's cause of death is also pending confirmation from the Medical Examiner's Office, with the Memphis Fire Department collaborating closely with the Memphis Police Department during this investigation process, as detailed by FOX13 Memphis.
