A tragic incident unfolded at Lara's Event Center in Smyrna, where a juvenile's 15th birthday party was disrupted by gunfire, leading to the death of one minor and injuries to another. The Smyrna Police Department reported the altercation began on Saturday night, during the event attended by approximately 50 minors, which escalated when a juvenile suspect discharged a firearm several times inside the building, according to an official press release obtained by WSMV.
The shooting occurred around 11 p.m. with one victim pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds, and another victim, not involved in the altercation, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, officials said. In the chaos that ensued, parents and children returned to the venue the following day to collect belongings left behind as the guests fled, recounted Yesenia Rodriguez, whose 14-year-old daughter managed to escape unharmed. "I’m trying not to get really emotional about it because you hear about school shootings and things like this, and you think it’s not going to happen to your child," Rodriguez told Fox 17 News.
The Smyrna Police swiftly detained the juvenile suspect outside the event center, finding them allegedly in possession of a firearm reported stolen out of Nashville. The suspect is now facing multiple charges and has been taken to the Juvenile Detention Center, WSMV reports. Investigators have interviewed multiple witnesses and have obtained security video footage of the incident.
In a statement posted on social media, Lara’s Event Center expressed deep regret for the incident, offering condolences to the victim’s family and emphasizing its commitment to safety at its events. "It is with deep regret that we inform you that last night a tragic incident occurred during a private event held at our facility, in which a young man sadly lost his life," the center stated, according to News 2. The mother of a daughter who narrowly missed attending the party, Emma Fajardo, highlighted the need for accountability and safety, "There’s no way that we can continue to have events and allow our children to go out into the community, and risk them not coming home," she told News 2.
The community of Smyrna has been left in shock by the incident as families and businesses lament the unexpected turn of events, where a celebration of life transitioned into a time of mourning. The investigation by local authorities continues as they work to piece together the events that led to the tragedy.
